Balancing scales - convert between g and kg

The scale is loaded with between 1 and 4 weights. The user then has to balance the scales, converting between g and kg in the process. There is a great deal of control over the level.

A great starter to explore addition, subtraction / difference and partitioning as well as the relationship between grams and kilograms. Levels include converting whole kg to g (and vice versa), converting fractions of kg (eg 1/4kg = 250g) and weights in kg to 1 and 2 decimal places.

New Maths Curriculum:

Year 5: Convert between different units of measure (e.g. kilometre and metre; metre and centimetre; centimetre and millimetre; kilogram and gram; litre and millilitre)

Year 4: Convert between different units of measure (e.g. kilometre to metre; hour to minute)

Year 3: Measure, compare, add and subtract: lengths (m/cm/mm); mass (kg/g); volume/capacity (l/ml)

KS2 Primary Framework:

Year 3:

Know the relationships between kilometres and metres, metres and centimetres, kilograms and grams, litres and millilitres; choose and use appropriate units to estimate, measure and record measurements. (Block C & D)

Year 4:

Solve one-step and two-step problems involving numbers, money or measures (Block A)

Choose and use standard metric units and their abbreviations when estimating, measuring and recording length, weight and capacity; know the meaning of ‘kilo’, ‘centi’ and ‘milli’ and, where appropriate, use decimal notation to record measurements (Block C & D)

Use decimal notation for tenths and hundredths and partition decimals; relate the notation to money and measurement (Block D)

Year 5

Use efficient written methods to add and subtract whole numbers and decimals with up to two places (Block A)

Read, choose, use and record standard metric units to estimate and measure length, weight and capacity to a suitable degree of accuracy (e.g. the nearest centimetre); convert larger to smaller units using decimals to one place (e.g. change 2.6 kg to 2600 g) (Block C & D)

Use knowledge of place value and addition and subtraction of two-digit numbers to derive sums and differences and doubles and halves of decimals (e.g. 6.5 ± 2.7, half of 5.6, double 0.34) (Block E)

Year 6

Select and use standard metric units of measure and convert between units using decimals to two places (Block C&D)
